Business Analyst Salary UK 2026: Pay by Level, Sector and Location

Advertised BA pay fell in 2026 while data analyst pay rose. What business analysts earn at each level, where pay is highest, and what moves it.
Ask what a business analyst earns in the UK and you will get three different answers, depending on where you look. Job adverts show what employers are offering now. Salary sites such as Glassdoor show what people in the job report being paid. Government pay scales show fixed bands. All three are useful, as long as you know which one you are reading.
This guide uses advertised salaries from ITJobsWatch as the main measure, because they are recent, large and comparable over time, and points out where other sources disagree.

ITJobsWatch, six months to October 2026. The junior figure comes from only a handful of adverts, so treat it as a guide.
Salary sites report lower pay. Glassdoor puts the average UK business analyst salary at about £45,900, based on more than 21,000 self-reported salaries. Adverts skew towards larger employers and London, while self-reported figures include smaller firms and people who have not changed jobs recently.
How much does a junior business analyst earn in the UK?
Junior business analyst adverts have a median of about £33,000, and most fall between £30,000 and £42,000 (ITJobsWatch, October 2026). Glassdoor puts graduate business analysts at around £32,500. In the Civil Service, junior business analyst roles are usually at Executive Officer or Higher Executive Officer grade.
How much does a senior business analyst earn?
The median advertised senior business analyst salary is £65,000, with most adverts between £55,000 and £79,000, and the top tenth at £100,000 or more (ITJobsWatch, six months to October 2026). That is down from a £75,000 median a year earlier, the sharpest fall of the three levels.
Pay by sector
Business analysis concentrates in organisations running large change programmes, and pay follows the size and risk of that change.
- Financial services is the largest employer of business analysts in the UK. Banking, insurance and payments roles sit at the upper end, particularly where regulation is involved.
- Consultancies hire in volume, often at graduate level, and pay rises quickly with client-facing experience.
- The public sector pays on fixed grades. The Government Digital and Data profession maps business analyst roles to Civil Service grades: junior roles at EO or HEO, business analysts at HEO or SEO, senior business analysts at SEO or Grade 7, and lead business analysts at Grade 7. Each advert shows its exact pay band.
- Retail, utilities and telecoms hire around systems replacement and process improvement, typically closer to the median.
London and the regions
London pays the most. The median advertised business analyst salary in London is £67,500, against £55,000 across the UK (ITJobsWatch, six months to October 2026). London also fell the furthest, from £80,000 a year earlier.
Hybrid working has narrowed the gap for some roles, because a London employer may hire someone who comes into the office once or twice a week. If you live outside London, it is worth checking how many office days an advert really expects before ruling it out.
Contract business analysts: day rates and IR35
Contracting is common in business analysis, because change programmes have a start and an end. The median business analyst contract rate is £500 a day, unchanged on a year earlier, across 2,058 contract adverts. The middle half of rates runs from £425 to £600. London's median is £525 and the rest of the UK's is £475 (ITJobsWatch, six months to October 2026).
A day rate is not a salary. Contractors are not paid for holidays, sickness or gaps between contracts, and how they are taxed depends on IR35. Since April 2021, medium and large private-sector clients decide whether a contract is "inside IR35", where tax is taken as if you were an employee, or "outside", where you run your own limited company. Inside-IR35 rates need to be noticeably higher to match the same take-home pay.
Most people contract only after several years in permanent roles, once they have a track record that a client will pay a premium for.
What moves business analyst pay
Domain knowledge. A business analyst who understands insurance underwriting, payments or NHS patient pathways is worth more than a generalist, and this is where earlier career experience pays.
Agile and product skills. Agile is named in about a third of UK business analyst adverts, and user stories in more than a fifth (ITJobsWatch). Experience as the analyst inside a Scrum team is now close to expected.
Data skills. A business analyst who can write their own SQL can check an assumption without waiting for someone else, and fewer analysts can do it than you might expect.
Certifications. BCS and IIBA certifications are the most recognised in the UK. They help most early in a career, when there is little else to show.
